Sara Richman Harris was a collector of beautiful objects; one of her favorite pastimes was attending auction sales in the Albany area. Her house on Shaker Road was chock full of antiques– dolls, vases, ceramic bowls, trays, silver samovars, as well as modern glass. Sara’s fascination with form, shape and texture is evident in her still lifes—the earllest of which shown here dates back to 1935, when Sara was 14.
Also included are watercolors, oils, pastels, drawings and encaustics from the 1930s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s. They show Sara’s incredible eye, skill, range of styles and historical influences—as well as a consistency of color, line, shape and composition throughout her artistic life. In fact, an urn included in a 1930s charcoal drawing turns up again in a watercolor she painted 20 or more years later.
